BIOS reporting poor battery health immediately after fitting a new cell
The Aspire One 14 Z1401 stores battery health data in EEPROM on the pack itself. When a new cell goes in, the BIOS reads that EEPROM as blank or mismatched and flags it as degraded — even though the chemistry is fresh. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% to initialise the learn cycle. After two or three full cycles, the BIOS health reading will normalise.
Laptop shuts down at 20–30% charge shown on the gauge
This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's actual voltage curve. The gauge inherited capacity data from the old, degraded cell and is reading the remaining charge incorrectly. Under full CPU plus display load, the cell hits its low-voltage cutoff before the OS registers empty. Run two complete discharge-to-hibernate and charge-to-100% cycles — after that, the fuel gauge IC recalibrates and the shutdowns stop. If it persists past three cycles, check that charge voltage at the pack connector reaches 12.6V.
