This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still using the discharge curve it learned from the old, degraded cell. When the modem fires a high-current burst or the screen backlight peaks, the new cell's voltage under load drops faster than the IC expects at that reported percentage. The IC interprets this as an emergency low-voltage condition and cuts power before the display ever reaches 0%. One full discharge-to-shutdown followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% rewrites the reference curve. After that cycle, shutdowns at 20–30% stop.
Phone warm near the battery during charging on first cycle
A new Li-ion cell has higher internal impedance than a cell that has been through several charge cycles. The charge IC pushes current into this higher impedance and generates more heat than usual until the cell's impedance settles. This is normal on cycle one and typically resolves by cycle three. If the phone remains warm past cycle three, check that the rear cover is seated flat — any gap traps heat at the battery.
