Airbus BLN-19 — 3.8V Li-ion Replacement Battery
This 3.8V Li-ion battery replaces the Airbus BLN-19 in professional portable two-way radios used in commercial and field communications. It carries 6900mAh (26.22Wh) of capacity. The cell format and connector match the original BLN-19 specification directly.
- BLN-19 platform fit: Airbus portable radios using the BLN-19 share a common voltage rail and BMS handshake protocol. Swapping to this cell keeps the radio's power management circuitry operating within its expected threshold window without requiring firmware adjustments.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through transmit-load draws and monitored BMS response at PTT current spikes. The protection circuit held cutoff thresholds correctly and recovered cleanly after sustained RF output loads.
- First insertion contact check: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Airbus platform requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.
Why the BLN-19 radio cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery
When you press PTT, transmit current draw spikes sharply — often two to three times the standby draw. A new cell at storage voltage sits closer to the BMS low-threshold than a fully charged cell does. If the BMS reads that spike as an undervoltage event, it trips the overcurrent protection and cuts power to the radio. This is not a faulty battery. A full charge cycle before the first field use brings the cell to 4.2V and gives the BMS enough headroom to handle transmit spikes without tripping.

New Li-ion cells ship at roughly 3.6–3.7V storage voltage, not a full charge. The Airbus radio maps voltage thresholds to bar segments, so a cell at storage voltage reads one bar lower than a fully charged cell at 4.2V. This is a voltage-threshold display issue, not a capacity defect. Run one full charge cycle through the dock and the bar indicator will reflect the correct charge state.
