Why the Kindle Voyage shuts down at 15–20% after a battery swap
The Voyage's fuel gauge IC stores a capacity model calibrated to the old, degraded cell. When a new cell is installed, that stored model no longer matches actual cell voltage behaviour. The result is a voltage cliff — the device reads 15–20% remaining but the fuel gauge triggers low-voltage cutoff because the curve doesn't align. One full discharge-to-shutoff cycle followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% rewrites the capacity model and eliminates the premature cutoff.

This is a fuel gauge drift issue, not a cell defect. The percentage shown on screen is calculated by the fuel gauge IC using a stored profile from the previous battery. A fresh cell has different open-circuit voltage characteristics, so the gauge reads incorrectly until recalibrated. Discharge the Voyage completely until it powers off on its own, then plug in and charge to 100% without interruption — the gauge recalibrates during that single cycle.
