Swapping to a pack with a mismatched BMS profile causes the driver to reject the battery or report a fault at startup.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the Element's LED driver under full-output constant-current draw. The BMS held the 11.1V nominal rail without premature cutoff, and cell balancing remained within 20mV across all three cells after five full discharge cycles.
- Storage charge for idle fixtures: If the Element will sit unused for more than two weeks, leave this battery at approximately 50% charge. Storing a high-capacity 7800mAh Li-ion cell at full charge in a warm equipment case accelerates capacity fade noticeably faster than storing at half-state.
Why the Element dims in steps before the low-battery indicator triggers
The Element's LED driver operates in constant-current mode, which means it actively compensates for voltage sag — up to a point. When cell voltage drops under sustained high-output draw, the driver hits its regulation floor and steps the output down to protect the LEDs, even if the battery indicator hasn't flagged low yet. This happens because the indicator reads state-of-charge from the BMS, not from the instantaneous voltage under load. A healthy 7800mAh pack has enough headroom to push through these sag events without stepping down. A degraded or partially discharged pack cannot sustain the current demand, so the step-down triggers early.
Element shows a fault or won't accept the battery after an extended storage period
If a Li-ion pack sits discharged for several months, individual cells can drop below the ballast firmware's acceptance threshold — typically around 2.5V per cell, or 7.5V total for a 3S pack. The Element's onboard circuitry reads the pack voltage at startup and rejects anything below that floor as a safety measure. To recover the pack, use a Li-ion charger that supports a "recovery" or low-voltage pre-charge mode, which trickle-charges cells back above the acceptance threshold before switching to standard CC/CV charging. Once the pack reads above 9V resting voltage, reconnect it to the fixture and power cycle to clear the fault.
