BMS lockout after the VPW-CP sat on standby for months
Ni-MH cells self-discharge over time, and if the pack voltage drops below roughly 6V while sitting unused, the BMS enters a protection state and refuses a standard charge cycle. The charger circuit inside the VPW-CP sees a pack it considers unsafe and will not initiate charging. To recover the pack, connect it to a compatible external Ni-MH charger capable of a low-current pre-charge pulse — typically 0.1C — until cell voltage climbs above 7.2V, then return it to the panel for a normal charge cycle.
Panel shows inconsistent battery percentage after a fresh pack is installed
The VPW-CP uses a voltage-threshold method to estimate battery state, not a coulomb counter. When a new pack replaces a degraded one, the panel's stored threshold table is calibrated to the old cell behaviour, so the percentage reading will appear erratic or jump non-linearly for the first few charge-discharge cycles. Run two full charge and discharge cycles through a mains interruption test or a controlled load, and the panel's indicator will settle to accurate readings against the new cell baseline.
