Why the iPhone 15 Pro reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap
The iPhone 15 Pro uses a coulomb counter that builds its state-of-charge model against the original cell's discharge curve over hundreds of cycles. When a new cell goes in, that learned model no longer matches the actual cell chemistry, so the percentage reading drifts. The fix is one full uninterrupted discharge to automatic shutdown followed by a full charge to 100% with fast charging off. After that single cycle, the fuel gauge IC re-anchors its model to the new cell and percentage accuracy stabilises.
Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the replacement cell
This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to an old, degraded cell that had a steep voltage cliff near depletion. The new cell hits a point where reported percentage and actual cell voltage diverge — the phone reads 25% but the open-circuit voltage has already dropped below the modem's minimum load threshold. The BMS trips a protection cutoff rather than letting the SoC brown out. Run one full discharge to 0% shutdown and charge back to 100% without interruption — after that cycle, the reported cutoff point should align with the actual cell floor near 3.0V.
