- Fuel gauge reset after installation: After fitting this battery, run the iPad down to automatic shutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This gives the fuel gauge IC a full reference cycle against the new cell and clears the inaccurate percentage readings that almost always appear after a swap.

This happens when the original cell's internal resistance has climbed high enough that combined display and Wi-Fi load pulls the voltage below the BMS cutoff threshold — even though the reported percentage still looks safe. The fuel gauge IC was calibrated to the degraded cell, so its 20% reading no longer maps to a real voltage level. A new cell fixes the underlying voltage sag, but the gauge still needs one full discharge-to-shutoff cycle to recalibrate. After that cycle, unexpected cutoffs at 15–25% stop occurring.

The fuel gauge IC in the iPad Mini learns the capacity curve of the cell it was last calibrated against. Drop in a new cell and the IC is still referencing the old cell's data, so it reports percentages that jump, stall, or read high until the device cuts off. Run one full discharge to automatic shutoff, then charge in one uninterrupted session to 100%. The IC uses that cycle to map voltage to capacity on the new cell. After a single complete cycle, percentage display stabilises.
