Why the M50 BIOS reports poor battery health straight after a new cell install
The BIOS on M50-series notebooks stores learned capacity data in EEPROM from the previous cell. When a new cell goes in, that stored data no longer matches actual chemistry, and the BIOS flags the battery as degraded or unknown. This is a data mismatch, not a fault with the replacement. Running two full discharge-to-hibernate cycles then charging to 100% each time forces the fuel gauge IC to recalibrate against the new cell's actual voltage curve. After those cycles, the health warning clears and the reported capacity aligns with the 73.26Wh rating.

This happens when the fuel gauge IC still holds calibration data from the degraded original cell. Under combined CPU and display load, the reported percentage is wrong — the cell voltage is already at the low-cutoff cliff while Windows shows capacity remaining. The BMS cuts power to protect the cells, so the shutdown looks premature. Run a full discharge to hibernate, then a full uninterrupted charge to 100%, and repeat once more — the fuel gauge re-anchors to the new cell's actual voltage range, typically resolving at the 10.5V low-end cutoff.
