Baofeng UV-82 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BL-8)
This is a 7.4V, 1300mAh Li-ion replacement for the Baofeng BL-8 pack. It fits the UV-82, UV-8R, UV-82X, and UV-82C handhelds, along with five additional UV-82 platform variants. Voltage and connector match the original specification exactly.
- UV-82 platform compatibility: Every model in this list shares the same dual-PTT architecture, 7.4V voltage rail, and BL-8 form factor. The battery bay latch, contact pin layout, and BMS handshake protocol are identical across UV-82, UV-8R, UV-82X, and UV-82C — one pack covers the whole family.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on a UV-82 through repeated PTT keying sequences. The BMS held the output rail steady through transmit current spikes and tripped correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold without locking the radio out.
- First-insertion contact check: If the charger shows a fault indicator on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the three gold contact pads on the battery base with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The UV-82 charger dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging starts.
Why the UV-82 cuts out mid-transmission on a new BL-8
A new Li-ion cell ships at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.75V per cell, not full charge. On the UV-82, the BMS monitors cell voltage under the transmit load spike. If the resting voltage is low enough, that spike can pull the cell below the BMS cutoff threshold, dropping the radio mid-key. This is not a faulty pack. Charge the battery fully before the first transmission session and the cutout stops.
Bar indicator reads one fewer bar than expected after swap
The UV-82 uses a simple voltage-threshold bar display — it reads the cell voltage and maps it to a bar level. A new pack at storage voltage will show two or three bars, not four. This is accurate — the cell is not fully charged yet. After a complete charge cycle, the pack should read at or above 8.2V at rest, and the indicator will show full bars.
