NiMH cells in cordless phones do not deliver full rated capacity on the first charge cycle. The chemistry needs three to five full charge-discharge cycles before the cells reach their rated 2000mAh. Each cycle builds on the last, so talk time improves progressively over the first week of normal use. After five cycles, if talk time is still noticeably short, check that the handset is fully seated in the cradle — a loose connection cuts charge current significantly.
Base station shows no charge light or error after battery swap
Replacement NiMH packs often arrive from storage at a low resting voltage — sometimes below the threshold the BT Freestyle base station requires before it starts a charge cycle. The base reads the pack as faulty and refuses to charge it. Remove the battery, leave it out for 60 seconds, then refit the handset firmly in the cradle. If the charge indicator still does not activate, the pack resting voltage may be too low — a short pulse from a compatible NiMH charger at 0.1C for 10 minutes is usually enough to bring it back above the 3.0V acceptance floor.
