Canon camera bodies run an authentication check when a new cell is installed. If the BMS hasn't seen a full charge cycle from an approved charger, it may flag the cell as incompatible or refuse to display charge state. This isn't a fault with the replacement cell — it's the BMS waiting for initialisation. Insert the battery, charge fully via the Canon OEM charger or in-body charging, then power the camera on. After that first cycle, the body should recognise the cell and display charge level correctly.
Battery percentage jumping erratically during a shoot
Canon's battery indicator maps charge state using voltage thresholds calibrated to the original cell's discharge curve. A replacement cell with a slightly different curve will sometimes cause the indicator to jump — say, from 60% to 20% without warning. This doesn't mean the cell is defective; it means the BMS is recalibrating its threshold mapping. After two or three full charge and discharge cycles, the indicator typically stabilises. If it doesn't settle after three cycles, check that the resting voltage after a full charge reads at or above 8.3V.
