Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (LP-E8)
This is a 7.4V, 1120mAh Li-ion replacement for the Canon LP-E8 battery. It fits the Canon EOS 550D, 600D, Rebel T2i, and the extended EF-S compatibility list. Same physical footprint and contact layout as the OEM cell.
- EOS 550D / 600D / Rebel T2i compatibility: These bodies share the LP-E8 form factor, 7.4V nominal rail, and identical battery chamber dimensions. The BMS communication protocol is consistent across this generation of Canon APS-C bodies, so one cell covers all of them.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through the Canon EOS 550D body and OEM charger. The BMS accepted the cell, charge termination triggered correctly at full capacity, and the battery-remaining indicator initialised without error after one full charge cycle.
- First-use charge cycle on LP-E8 bodies: Canon's battery management system on these bodies maps percentage display to the cell's discharge curve. Charge this battery fully inside the OEM charger or camera body before your first shoot — this lets the BMS calibrate the fuel gauge to the new cell correctly.

Canon EOS bodies from this era run an authentication check when a battery is inserted. If the cell hasn't completed a charge handshake yet, the body may display an "incompatible battery" warning or show no charge level at all. This is a first-use BMS state, not a defective cell. Insert the battery into an OEM Canon charger first, run one full charge cycle, then install it in the body — the warning clears and the indicator populates correctly.
Battery percentage jumping or resetting mid-shoot
This happens when the camera's fuel gauge is mapping voltage thresholds from the old cell's discharge curve onto a new cell. A fresh LP-E8 replacement has a slightly different voltage-to-capacity profile than a worn OEM cell. The indicator reads the voltage, misinterprets where it sits on the curve, and jumps. Run two full charge and discharge cycles through the camera body and the gauge recalibrates — after that, readings stabilise. If jumping continues past cycle two, check that resting voltage at full charge reaches 8.3–8.4V.
