Why a fresh CR2032 reads low on a multimeter straight out of the pack
Lithium coin cells sit in storage at a slightly suppressed open-circuit voltage — often 2.95–3.00V rather than the full 3V nominal. This is normal and not a sign of a depleted cell. Once the cell sees a small load, surface charge redistributes and the voltage climbs to rated output. Testing with a multimeter under no load can give a misleading reading; always measure under the load the target device places on the cell.
Device shows low-battery warning immediately after CR2032 swap
Some devices — particularly those with voltage threshold monitoring circuits — trigger a low-battery flag if the cell reads below approximately 2.8V on first contact. This happens because the cell hasn't yet stabilised from its storage state. Remove the cell, let it rest at room temperature for five minutes, then reinstall. If the warning clears, the cell is good. If it persists and the open-circuit voltage reads below 2.7V under a 15kΩ load, the cell is genuinely depleted.
