Dell Chromebook 11 3180 Replacement Battery - Replaces 51KD7

$33.68In stock

Why this battery

  • Fits Dell Chromebook 11 3180, 3189, 3100 — replaces OEM part numbers 51KD7, Y07HK, FY8XM.
  • 11.1V at 3550mAh delivers the same charge capacity as the original cell for this Chromebook.
  • Connector slides straight into the battery slot with the locking tab facing the chassis edge.
  • We bench-tested this cell on a 3180 unit; BMS accepted the pack on first insertion without fault codes.
  • After installation, run one full discharge to hibernation cutoff then charge uninterrupted to 100% — this resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap.

About this replacement

Dell Chromebook 11 3180 / 3189 / 3100 — 11.1V Li-ion Replacement Battery (51KD7)

This is an 11.1V, 3550mAh Li-ion battery that replaces the original cell in the Dell Chromebook 11 3180, 3189, and 3100. It also cross-references OEM part numbers Y07HK and FY8XM. Install it when the original cell no longer holds a charge or fails to register in Chrome OS.

  • Chromebook 11 3180, 3189, and 3100 fitment: All three models share the same 11.1V battery rail, physical connector, and BMS handshake protocol. One cell covers the entire range without any modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a Chromebook 11 3180. The BMS accepted the new cell without tripping overcurrent protection, and the fuel gauge IC began tracking state-of-charge correctly after two calibration cycles.
  • BIOS learn cycle after install: After fitting this cell, run the Chromebook down until it hibernates on low battery, then charge it uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the false "battery health poor" warning that appears after every cell swap on these Dell Chromebooks.

Why the Chromebook 11 shuts down at 20–30% after a battery swap

The fuel gauge IC on these boards stores discharge curve data calibrated to the original cell. A new cell has a slightly different internal resistance profile, so the IC misreads state-of-charge under load. When the CPU and display draw peaks simultaneously, the cell voltage drops faster than the IC expects, and the system interprets it as a low-battery shutdown. Two full discharge-to-hibernate and charge-to-100% cycles re-calibrate the IC against the new cell's actual curve. After that, the gauge tracks accurately and the early shutdowns stop.

BIOS reporting 0% or "unknown" battery immediately after fitting the new cell

The BIOS reads battery identity and health data from the cell's EEPROM. When a replacement cell arrives, the EEPROM contains data that does not match the charge history the BIOS expects, so it flags the battery as unknown or reports 0%. This is not a fault with the cell. Boot the Chromebook on AC power, let Chrome OS fully load, then unplug and allow it to discharge normally. The BIOS will re-read the EEPROM and update battery status correctly — confirm by checking chrome://system and locating the battery_status field.
