Why the G3 15 shuts down at 20–30% after a battery swap
The G3 15's fuel gauge IC builds its discharge curve against the original cell's capacity profile stored in EEPROM. When a new cell goes in, the IC still references the old curve, so it misjudges the actual remaining charge. Under full CPU plus display load, the new cell hits a voltage cliff earlier than the IC predicts. The result is an abrupt shutdown even though the OS gauge still shows charge remaining. Two to three full calibration cycles — discharge to hibernate, charge to 100% uninterrupted — realign the IC to the new cell's actual curve.
BIOS reporting battery health as poor immediately after installation
Dell's BIOS reads health data from the battery's EEPROM register, which on a new replacement cell contains factory default values that don't yet reflect a completed charge cycle. The BIOS interprets those defaults as a degraded state and flags poor health. This is a data mismatch, not a fault with the cell. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by a complete uninterrupted charge to 100% — the BIOS learn cycle will rewrite the health register and the warning will clear.
