The Precision 5530 2-in-1 BIOS reads health data from EEPROM stored on the old cell during every boot. When a new cell is installed, the EEPROM contains no accumulated cycle data, and some Dell firmware versions interpret this as a degraded or unknown pack. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by a complete uninterrupted charge to 100% — this forces the BIOS battery learn cycle to write fresh baseline data to the new cell's EEPROM and clears the warning on next boot.
Laptop shuts down abruptly at 20–30% shown on the fuel gauge
This happens when the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. The new Li-Polymer cell has a different voltage-to-capacity relationship, so the gauge reads 25% while the cell voltage has already dropped below the BMS cutoff threshold under full CPU and display load. The laptop cuts out because the cell cannot sustain voltage during peak draw — not because it is empty. Run two full discharge and charge calibration cycles, and the fuel gauge IC will remap its curve to the new cell. After the second cycle, shutdown should align with the gauge reading dropping below 5%.
