BIOS reporting poor battery health immediately after fitting a new cell
Dell's BIOS reads health status from EEPROM data stored on the battery controller, not from a live cell measurement. When you fit a replacement pack, the BIOS compares the new cell's reported cycle count and charge history against its internal threshold — and flags it as degraded before a single charge cycle runs. This is not a fault with the cell. One full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% resets the learn cycle and allows the BIOS to recalibrate against actual cell performance.

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's voltage curve. On first use, the IC uses the old cell's data to predict remaining capacity — and misjudges the voltage cliff where the cell can no longer sustain load under combined CPU and display draw. The system shuts down to protect itself, even though the gauge still shows charge remaining. Run two to three full discharge and charge cycles; the IC maps the new cell's curve and the gauge reading stabilises. After calibration, shutdown should not occur above 5–8V terminal voltage at the pack connector.
