Why the DL-14 motor slows down before the battery reads as dead
Alkaline cells drop voltage under load before the resting voltage falls enough to trigger a low-battery alert. The DL-14's deadbolt motor draws a spike of current on each throw — a cell that reads 6V at rest may sag to 5.2V or lower under that load. That sag slows the motor and can cause incomplete throws. Replacing the battery at first sign of sluggish movement, rather than waiting for the low-battery beep, prevents the lock from getting stuck mid-cycle.
Lock beeping low battery immediately after fitting a new cell
This usually means the battery seated incorrectly or polarity is reversed — even a slight contact gap will cause the DL-14 to read an insufficient voltage and trigger the alert immediately. Remove the battery, clean the contacts with a dry cloth, and reinsert firmly with polarity matching the markings in the compartment. If the alert continues with confirmed correct installation, check that the replacement voltage is exactly 6V — a 4.5V or 9V cell in the same footprint will trigger the same warning. Confirm the resting voltage reads 6.0–6.3V before closing the compartment.
