Why the Satellite Pro C40-K reports poor battery health immediately after a cell swap
The C40-K reads battery health from EEPROM data stored on the battery's BMS chip, not from live cell measurements. When you fit a new cell, the BIOS compares the new EEPROM profile against the logged history of the old one and flags a mismatch as degraded health. This is a firmware behaviour, not a fault with the replacement. One full discharge-to-hibernate followed by a complete uninterrupted charge cycle resets the learn cycle and clears the warning.
Laptop shuts down at 20–30% charge remaining after battery swap
This happens when the fuel gauge IC still holds calibration data from the old, degraded cell. It maps the new cell's voltage curve incorrectly, so it reads 20–30% at a point where the cell is actually near its floor voltage. Under full CPU and display load, the cell voltage drops sharply at that point and the system cuts out. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate and full charge cycles to force the gauge IC to relearn the new cell's voltage curve. After calibration, the shutdown threshold should align with the real 0% floor near 10.5V per pack.
