When the original cell degrades and suction drops off early, this swap restores full motor voltage to the unit.

Suction dropping before the battery indicator reaches low
On the DC31 and DC35, the motor controller pulls harder when airflow is restricted — a partially blocked filter forces the motor to draw above its rated current just to maintain suction. The BMS reads this elevated draw as a near-depletion event and steps down voltage to protect the cell. The battery itself still has capacity, but the BMS has already throttled output. Clean or replace the post-motor filter first, then retest before assuming the battery is at fault.
Motor cutting out mid-clean and then recovering after a few seconds
This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead cell. When sustained suction restriction drives current past the BMS threshold — common when the cyclone block is partially clogged — the protection circuit opens to prevent cell damage, killing the motor. The BMS resets automatically once current demand drops, which is why power returns after a short pause. Clear the cyclone inlet and filter before the next run, and confirm cell voltage reads above 20V on a multimeter at the terminals after a full charge.
