Why the FMV-7180MR3 shuts down at 20–30% charge remaining
The BIOS fuel gauge IC on this platform maps voltage curves against data stored from the original cell. A new cell with a slightly different discharge curve hits a voltage threshold the firmware interprets as critically low — even though charge physically remains. The laptop cuts power before the cell is actually depleted. Running two full discharge-to-hibernate and uninterrupted-recharge cycles recalibrates the fuel gauge against the new cell's actual voltage curve. After calibration, the shutdown point drops back to the correct low-charge threshold, typically below 5%.
BIOS reporting 0% or "poor health" immediately after battery swap
This happens because the BIOS reads health data from EEPROM registers on the battery pack — and the new cell's EEPROM values do not match the wear history the firmware was tracking on the old pack. The system flags the mismatch as a fault rather than a fresh cell. It is not a hardware fault with the replacement battery. Boot into the Fujitsu battery utility or run a full discharge-and-recharge cycle to prompt the BIOS to write new baseline data to its registers, clearing the warning.
