A Ni-CD cell that has been in storage typically sits below the float acceptance window the charge controller expects — often under 4.2V on a 4-cell pack. When the controller reads that voltage on first connection, it holds the fault state rather than entering normal charge mode. Leave the fitting connected to mains for a full 24-hour period. The trickle charge will bring the cell voltage up into the 4.8V float window, and the indicator should shift to green once that threshold is crossed.

A new cell that has not completed its first full conditioning cycle will not deliver rated capacity on an early test. The cell voltage drops faster than expected under load, and the fitting dims or shuts off before the test duration is met. This is not a fault with the cell — Ni-CD chemistry requires one full charge and discharge cycle to reach labelled capacity. Allow 24 hours on charge after installation, then run the full test again.
