When cell voltage drops toward the lower end of the 3.7V nominal range, some GPS receivers reduce radio-frequency gain to shed current draw. The TR-203's battery gauge reads state-of-charge based on voltage, and a new cell has a slightly different discharge curve than a worn original. Until the device recalibrates against a few full cycles, the low-battery threshold can trigger a hard shutoff before the visual indicator reaches the final bar. Run two to three complete discharge-and-charge cycles to let the gauge recalibrate. After that, shutoff should align with the indicator hitting 3.5V at the cutoff point.
