Hart InterCivic Demo eSlate — 12V Alkaline Replacement Battery (JBC 2001-596)
This is a 12V 15000mAh (180Wh) alkaline replacement battery for the Hart InterCivic Demo eSlate direct-recording electronic voting system. It fits the Demo eSlate unit used in election testing, training deployments, and polling operations where primary power is unavailable. Voltage and capacity match the original JBC 2001-596 / OSA295 specification.
- Demo eSlate power rail: The eSlate's touchscreen controller, ballot rendering processor, and internal storage all draw from a single 12V bus. This battery maintains that rail through the full polling session, including peak draws during screen refresh and audio ballot playback.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through full eSlate power-up cycles, confirming stable 12V delivery across the BMS handshake and sustained load during simulated voter interaction sequences without voltage sag tripping the low-battery cutoff.

Why the Demo eSlate triggers a low-battery warning shortly after a fresh pack is installed
Alkaline cells develop a passivation layer on the anode surface during storage. This raises internal resistance temporarily, causing the eSlate's voltage-threshold monitor to read a lower effective voltage than the cell's actual state of charge. The false low-battery flag usually clears after the first moderate draw cycle — running the unit through a full diagnostics sequence is enough. If the warning persists past two full cycles, check the battery contacts for oxidation before swapping the pack.
eSlate shuts down unexpectedly during a Logic and Accuracy test session
The L&A test cycle is the heaviest sustained draw the eSlate produces — screen at full brightness, audio output active, and storage writes happening simultaneously. A pack that is partially depleted or has elevated internal resistance from storage may drop below the BMS cutoff threshold under this combined load even if the battery indicator showed adequate charge at rest. Remove the pack, measure open-circuit voltage with a multimeter — a healthy 12V alkaline pack should read above 12.4V at rest. If the reading is below 12V, replace the pack before the test session continues.
