Homelite Cordless Shrub Shear — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This 7.2V, 1800mAh Ni-MH pack replaces the SC1800x6 battery in the Homelite UT44171 and UT44176 cordless shrub shears. These are motorized blade trimmers for cutting small hedges and garden shrubs. Capacity matches OEM spec at 12.96Wh.
- UT44171 and UT44176 compatibility: Both models run the same 7.2V rail with the same connector and BMS interface, so one battery platform covers either shear without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran full charge/discharge cycles — the BMS held voltage steady under motor load and cut off cleanly at the low-voltage threshold without triggering a false fault state.
- First-cycle conditioning for Ni-MH: Run the shear until the blades slow noticeably, then charge fully — repeat this two or three times to bring the cells to rated capacity before normal use.
Why cell format matters in a compact shrub shear
The SC1800x6 platform stacks six sub-C Ni-MH cells in series to reach 7.2V. The 86.50 x 67.10 x 22.70mm envelope keeps the pack within the tool's slim handle geometry. Swapping to a higher-capacity cell in the same footprint isn't possible without changing the housing, so 1800mAh is the practical ceiling for this form factor.
Blades slow under load but the charge indicator still shows full
Ni-MH cells develop memory effect after repeated shallow discharge cycles — the pack voltage reads acceptable at rest but collapses when the blade motor draws current. The fix is a deliberate deep discharge followed by a full charge, repeated two to three times. If the problem persists, the cells have reached end of life and the pack needs replacement, not conditioning.
