Why the EliteBook 845 G9 BIOS flags a new battery as poor health
The HP BIOS reads health data stored in the battery's EEPROM, not live cell voltage. When you swap cells, the EEPROM on the replacement doesn't match the charge history the BIOS was tracking on the old unit. The system interprets this mismatch as degradation. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted full charge lets the BIOS re-index against the new cell and clears the warning on most G9 units.
EliteBook shutting down at 20–30% charge remaining after battery swap
This is a voltage cliff symptom. Under combined CPU and display load, the cell voltage drops faster than the fuel gauge IC expects based on uncalibrated EEPROM data from the old battery. The BIOS triggers a protection shutdown before the displayed percentage reaches zero. Two to three full discharge and charge cycles recalibrate the fuel gauge IC to the new cell's actual discharge curve. After calibration, shutdown should not occur above 5–7% on normal workloads.
