The EliteBook 8460p BIOS reads health data from the battery's EEPROM on first contact. This happens when the cell cannot sustain voltage under combined CPU and display load — the voltage drops off a cliff faster than the fuel gauge IC predicted. The gauge was calibrated against the old, degraded cell, so its remaining-charge estimate is wrong for the new cell's discharge curve. The fix is the same calibration cycle: discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, charge to 100% without interruption. After two full cycles the fuel gauge IC maps the new cell's curve accurately and the early shutdowns stop.
