HP's embedded controller reads EEPROM data written by the original cell during manufacture. When a new cell goes in, that EEPROM signature does not match the EC's stored learn data, so the system flags health as poor or unknown before any real-world cycles have occurred. This is a firmware state, not a battery fault. One full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% allows the EC to write a new baseline. After that cycle, health status typically corrects itself.

The fuel gauge IC on the 15-DS platform maps state-of-charge using voltage curves calibrated to the original cell's chemistry. A new cell with slightly different internal resistance produces a voltage cliff the uncalibrated gauge misreads as a higher remaining charge than actually exists. Under combined CPU and display load, the cell voltage drops below the EC's cutoff threshold before the gauge hits zero. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate and full charge cycles — this gives the fuel gauge IC enough data points to recalibrate its discharge curve to 15.2V nominal chemistry.
