Why the Omen 15-EK shuts down at 20–30% shown after a battery swap
The Omen 15-EK's fuel gauge IC calibrates its empty-point estimate against charge history stored in the old cell's EEPROM. After a swap, that history is gone and the IC defaults to a conservative voltage floor. Under full CPU plus display load, the new cell hits a voltage cliff the IC interprets as empty — even though the state-of-charge display still reads 20–30%. One full discharge-to-hibernate cycle forces the IC to relearn the actual empty voltage for the new cell and the premature shutdowns stop.
BIOS reports battery health as "poor" or "unknown" immediately after install
This happens because BIOS pulls health data from EEPROM registers that don't exist on a fresh cell — the controller reads null values and flags the battery as degraded. It is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run HP's battery check utility after completing two full charge-discharge cycles. By cycle two, the EEPROM registers populate with real capacity data and the health status clears to normal.
