The ProBook 4230s BIOS reads health data stored in the battery's EEPROM and compares it against the old cell's charge history. A fresh cell has no accumulated cycle data, so the BIOS flags it as degraded or unknown. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run the battery learn cycle — one full discharge to hibernate then an uninterrupted charge to 100% — and the BIOS health status will update correctly.

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's actual chemistry. The percentage reading is based on stale data from the previous battery, so the ProBook's power controller hits a voltage cliff and cuts off before the gauge reads zero. The fix is the same calibration cycle — discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, charge to 100% without interruption. After two to three cycles the fuel gauge tracks accurately and the premature shutdown stops.
