Why the Spectre X360 15-EB shuts down at 20–30% charge remaining
This happens when the fuel gauge IC still holds calibration data from the old, degraded cell. Under full CPU plus display load, the new cell's actual voltage is higher than the old cell's equivalent at that state-of-charge — but the IC reads the percentage against a stale capacity map and triggers shutdown early. Running two or three full discharge-to-hibernate cycles allows the fuel gauge to remap its discharge curve against the new cell's voltage profile. After calibration, shutdowns at inflated percentages stop.
BIOS reporting battery health as "poor" immediately after replacement
The HP BIOS reads health data from the battery's EEPROM, which logs cycle count, charge history, and rated capacity. On a new cell, this EEPROM is either blank or carries factory defaults the BIOS flags as mismatched. The fix is to complete a full battery learn cycle: discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without interruption.
