Why the Split 13 BIOS reports poor battery health after a cell swap
The Split 13 stores charge history and health data in EEPROM on the original cell's BMS board. When a new cell goes in, that EEPROM data is blank or mismatched, so the BIOS reads it as a degraded or unknown battery. This is a firmware interpretation issue, not a fault with the replacement cell. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% gives the BIOS enough data to recalibrate. After two to three full cycles, the health indicator typically returns to normal.

This symptom appears when the fuel gauge IC hasn't yet mapped the new cell's voltage curve. The gauge is still using the old cell's discharge profile, so it predicts a safe cutoff well before the actual voltage cliff. The laptop shuts down because the system hits its low-voltage threshold while the displayed percentage still looks safe. Run two to three full discharge and charge cycles — the fuel gauge IC recalibrates against the new cell and the shutdowns stop. After calibration, set the display brightness to mid-range and recheck the gauge reads correctly at the 15% mark.
