The HP BIOS on the TouchSmart 4 reads health data from EEPROM embedded in the old cell. When a new cell is fitted, that EEPROM data is gone — the BIOS flags the battery as unknown or degraded because it has no history to reference. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Running one complete discharge-to-hibernate and uninterrupted charge-to-full cycle forces the BIOS to write fresh calibration data. After two to three of these cycles, the health indicator returns to normal.
Laptop shuts down abruptly at 20–30% charge shown on screen
This happens when the cell voltage drops below the BMS cutoff threshold under combined CPU and display load — even though the OS fuel gauge still reads 20–30%. The fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated to the new cell's actual discharge curve. The fix is to complete two or three full discharge-to-hibernate cycles without interruption. After calibration, the gauge tracks cell voltage accurately and the shutdown point aligns with the displayed percentage. Confirm calibration is complete when the laptop reaches hibernate at or below 5% shown.
