iRobot Roomba i7 / i7+ Series — 14.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (ABL-D1)
This is a 14.4V, 6800mAh lithium-ion replacement battery for the iRobot Roomba i7, i7+, e5, and compatible models. It slots into the underside battery bay and powers the drive motors, suction motor, and onboard navigation hardware. Swap it when the original cell no longer holds enough charge to complete a cleaning cycle.
- Roomba i7, i7+, and e5 compatibility: These models share the same 14.4V battery architecture, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. A battery that passes the handshake on the i7 will also initialise correctly on the e5 and i7+ without any firmware prompts or error states.

The BMS communicated correctly with the dock charger, current draw during boost-suction mode stayed within the expected range, and no overcurrent trips were triggered across repeated cycles.
- Dock charging habit for Roomba i7: The i7 is designed to return to its dock automatically, which means it sits on charge far more than it runs. Continuous trickle charging degrades lithium-ion cells faster than intermittent use. Once the battery reaches full charge, remove the dock power or lift the robot off until the next scheduled clean.
Suction dropping before the battery indicator reaches low
The Roomba i7 suction motor is the single largest current draw in the system. When the battery cell ages or a filter is partially blocked, internal resistance climbs and voltage sags under load — even if the battery gauge still reads mid-range. The BMS reads this voltage sag as a low-cell condition and throttles motor power before the indicator reflects it. A new cell at full capacity restores the voltage headroom the suction motor needs to hold consistent airflow through the full cycle.
Roomba i7 stops mid-clean, pauses, then resumes on its own
This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a software glitch. It happens most often when the filter is restricted or a brush roller is partially jammed — the suction motor draws sustained high current trying to compensate, and the BMS cuts output to protect the cell. The robot pauses until the BMS resets, then resumes at reduced power. Clean or replace the filter first, then check the brush roller for hair wrap. If the behaviour continues after that, the battery cell itself can no longer sustain the current demand — replace it and confirm cell voltage reads at least 14.4V off the charger.
