Why the Apnoescreen charge indicator stalls below 100% on a new cell
The Apnoescreen's charge IC applies a conservative current limit when it detects a new or long-stored Ni-Cd cell with elevated internal resistance. The charge algorithm interprets higher resistance as a partially degraded cell and backs off the charge rate before delta-V termination fires. This means the indicator may stall at 80–90% on the first charge. One complete charge-discharge cycle conditions the cell, lowers internal resistance, and the charge IC will reach full termination correctly on the second cycle.
Apnoescreen not powering on after the replacement cell sat in storage
Ni-Cd cells self-discharge at roughly 15–20% per month at room temperature. A cell that has been in storage for several months can drop below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 4.8V for a 6V pack — and the device will not power on at all. This is not a dead cell; it is a BMS lockout. Connect the charger and leave it for a full charge cycle without attempting to power on the device. Once the pack climbs back above the 4.8V recovery threshold, the BMS releases the lockout and the device boots normally.
