A freshly installed Ni-CD cell rarely ships at full capacity. Storage and transit self-discharge can drop the cell to 30–50% of rated charge before it ever enters the fitting. The Kaufel charge controller tops the cell up via trickle charge, but that process takes up to 24 hours from a low state. Running a compliance duration test before that window closes will almost always produce a short result — not because the cell is faulty, but because it hasn't completed its first full charge cycle. Allow one full charge period, then retest.
Charge indicator staying red after new cell installation
Some Kaufel fittings require the cell voltage to sit within a narrow acceptance window before the charge circuit switches from bulk to float and the indicator turns green. A cell that arrives below roughly 5.4V may cause the controller to flag a fault rather than begin charging. Remove the cell, leave it disconnected for two minutes, then reinstall — this forces the controller to re-read cell voltage from scratch. If the indicator stays red beyond 48 hours of normal mains supply, measure cell voltage directly; it should be climbing toward 7.2–7.5V under trickle charge.
