A freshly installed Ni-Cd pack does not always deliver its full rated capacity on the first test. Storage time partially depletes the cells, and the charge controller needs at least one complete charge cycle to top the pack to true capacity. If the fitting cuts out before the required duration, it does not mean the battery is faulty. Run the fitting on charge for a minimum of 24 hours, then repeat the duration test — the pack should hold load through the full rated period at that point.
Charge indicator staying red after fitting a new battery
Some 850.0060 AA/4 fittings will hold a red or fault LED even after a confirmed good installation. This happens when the new cell arrives from storage at a voltage outside the charge controller's float acceptance window. The controller sees an out-of-range voltage and stays in fault mode rather than switching to trickle charge. Leave the fitting on mains power for a full 24-hour charge cycle — the cell voltage will climb into the acceptance band and the indicator should shift to green. If it does not clear after 24 hours, check the connector seating and confirm cell polarity against the original orientation.
