KERN PES/PEJ scales use a load cell amplifier that requires a stable supply voltage before it locks onto its reference point. When a fresh or recently fitted battery first powers the unit, the cell voltage climbs from resting state toward its operating level. During this climb the amplifier has not yet settled, so displayed readings can drift by several digits. Wait a full 30 seconds after power-on with nothing on the pan before placing any sample — the amplifier stabilises once supply voltage holds at 7.2V.
Scale not switching off automatically after a battery swap
The auto-off timer on PES/PEJ models is managed by the power-management circuit, which references a counter stored in low-power RAM. A hard power loss — such as a flat battery removed mid-session — can corrupt that counter, leaving the scale running indefinitely after the new battery goes in. To reset it, power the scale on, enter the setup menu (hold the Mode button for five seconds), and navigate to the power-off timer setting. Confirm the value and save — this rewrites the counter and restores normal auto-off behaviour.
