Why the K600 shuts down at 20–30% remaining after a battery swap
The K600's BIOS tracks a voltage-versus-capacity curve from the previous cell. When a new cell goes in, that learned curve no longer matches real cell behavior. Under combined CPU and display load, the new cell hits a voltage cliff earlier than the BIOS expects, triggering an emergency shutdown while the fuel gauge still reads 20–30%. Running one full calibration cycle — full discharge to hibernate, uninterrupted charge to 100% — rebuilds the curve against the new cell and stops the premature shutdowns.
OS fuel gauge reading 0% or bouncing wildly for the first few cycles
The fuel gauge IC on this platform reads EEPROM data from the original cell and maps capacity estimates against it. A replacement cell has different internal resistance and a fresh charge curve, so the IC has no accurate reference point until it observes a full cycle. The gauge will report erratic percentages — sometimes 0%, sometimes jumping 20 points — for the first two to three cycles. Complete two full discharge-to-cutoff and charge-to-100% cycles and the gauge will stabilise to within a few percent of actual remaining capacity.
