The Edge 15 BIOS reads health data stored in the old cell's EEPROM and compares it against the new cell's reported parameters at first boot. Because the new cell presents a fresh EEPROM with no cycle history, the BIOS interprets the mismatch as a fault. This is not a defective cell — it is a calibration gap. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%, and the BIOS learn cycle will overwrite the stale EEPROM baseline with accurate data from the new cell.
Laptop shuts down at 20–30% shown after installing replacement cell
This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still using the old cell's discharge curve to predict remaining capacity. The new cell hits a voltage cliff under combined CPU and display load at a different point than the old cell did. The fuel gauge reads 20–30% on the old curve, but the actual cell voltage has already dropped below the EC's cutoff threshold. Run two to three full discharge and charge cycles — by the third cycle, the fuel gauge IC recalibrates against the new cell's curve and the shutdowns stop.
