The ThinkPad BIOS reads health data stored in the battery's EEPROM — not from live cell measurements. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate then a complete uninterrupted charge forces the BIOS to rewrite its stored profile against the new cell's actual chemistry.
Laptop shuts down abruptly at 20–30% shown on the gauge
This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's voltage curve. During high CPU and display loads, the cell's voltage drops faster than the uncalibrated gauge predicts — the system hits the hardware low-voltage cutoff while the OS still shows 20–30% remaining. It is not a faulty cell. After two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles, the fuel gauge IC recalibrates and the shutdowns stop. Confirm calibration is complete by checking that the gauge reads below 5% before the system triggers hibernate.
