The fuel gauge IC calibrates its state-of-charge estimate against the old cell's charge curve. With a new cell installed, the IC underestimates remaining capacity and hits its low-voltage cutoff threshold earlier than the percentage shown. Under full CPU and display load, the voltage sag accelerates this. Two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles recalibrate the IC against the new cell's actual curve, after which the shutoff point tracks correctly to below 5% remaining.
