When a new cell is installed, the Lenovo BIOS reads EEPROM data cached from the previous battery. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. One full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% rewrites the BIOS battery learn cycle against the new EEPROM baseline. Laptop shuts down abruptly while the gauge still shows 20–25%
This happens when the fuel gauge IC's stored capacity model no longer matches the new cell's actual discharge curve. Under full CPU plus display load, the cell hits a voltage cliff that the uncalibrated gauge did not predict, and the system cuts power to protect itself. The gauge IC needs two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles before its model aligns with the new cell.
