As a Li-Polymer cell ages, its internal resistance rises. Under amplifier load — especially at higher volume levels — the cell voltage sags below the threshold the amplifier needs to operate cleanly. The speaker clips the audio signal before the low-battery indicator triggers because the protection circuit threshold is set lower than the amplifier's clean-operating floor. Replacing the cell restores the voltage headroom the amp needs. After fitting the new battery, run it through one full charge before extended use to let the BMS establish an accurate capacity baseline.
PL2 won't wake from USB-C after sitting unused for weeks
Li-Polymer cells self-discharge during storage. If the PL2 sits unused long enough, the cell drops below the minimum voltage USB-C PD will accept — typically around 2.5V — and the charger refuses to negotiate a session. The BMS is protecting the cell from an unsafe charge rate at that voltage. To recover a deeply discharged original cell, some chargers offer a trickle-charge mode, but a cell that has reached this state repeatedly will have lost measurable capacity. If the speaker won't respond to USB-C after storage, check the cell voltage with a multimeter at the battery terminals — anything below 2.8V on a 3.7V nominal cell is a strong indicator the pack needs replacement.
