This is a 14.4V, 4000mAh Ni-CD replacement battery for the Lithonia ELB 1444N emergency lighting unit. It slots into the fitting to restore backup illumination during mains failure. Capacity is 4000mAh (57.6Wh), matching the original cell specification.
- ELB 1444N compatibility: The ELB 1444N charge controller expects a specific Ni-CD cell voltage curve and a 14.4V nominal pack to complete its float charge handshake. Swapping chemistry or voltage breaks that cycle and trips a permanent fault LED.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack on the ELB 1444N charge circuit and confirmed the BMS accepted the cell voltage on first connection, progressed from bulk charge to float within the expected window, and drove the load lamps at full rated output.
- First-cycle test requirement: Within 24 hours of installation, hold the test button for the full rated test duration. This lets the charge controller register the new cell capacity before any scheduled compliance inspection. Skipping this step can cause a false fail on the duration test.
Charge indicator staying red after new battery installation
The ELB 1444N charge controller uses cell voltage to confirm a valid battery is present before switching from fault to charge mode. A new Ni-CD pack that has been in storage can sit below the controller's float acceptance window — typically under 13.8V — and the unit reads this as a missing or dead cell. The fix is to leave the fitting powered for 12 to 24 hours. If the indicator has not moved to green by then, measure pack voltage directly at the connector; it should read above 14.0V before the controller accepts it.
Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement
A fresh Ni-CD cell does not deliver rated capacity on the first discharge. The cell chemistry requires at least one full charge-discharge cycle before it reaches the 4000mAh figure. If a compliance test runs before that conditioning cycle, the lamp output drops early and the unit fails the required duration. Run a manual test cycle immediately after installation, allow the pack to fully recharge — 24 hours minimum — and only then schedule the formal compliance test. Voltage at end of charge should stabilise at 16.2V to 17.0V across the pack before you sign it off.
