This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still reading the old cell's voltage-to-capacity curve. When the new cell hits a steeper voltage drop under modem or screen load, the phone sees voltage fall below its shutdown threshold before the displayed percentage reaches zero. The OS shuts down to protect the board even though the gauge still shows charge remaining. One full slow discharge-charge cycle — without fast charging — resets the coulomb counter and maps the new cell's actual curve, stopping the premature cutoffs.

Erratic percentage readings after a cell swap are a fuel gauge IC recalibration issue, not a fault with the new cell. The coulomb counter accumulated error data from the degraded original battery over hundreds of cycles, and it carries that error forward to the new cell immediately. The fix is straightforward: let the phone discharge to automatic shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100% at standard speed with the screen off.
