This is a 14.4V, 3000mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Metabo BSZ 14.4 cordless drill-driver and related models. It fits the BSZ 14.4, BSZ 14.4 Impuls, SBZ 14.4 Impuls, and ULA9.6-18. Capacity is 3000mAh (43.2Wh), matching the OEM pack specification.
- BSZ 14.4 and Impuls platform compatibility: The BSZ 14.4, BSZ 14.4 Impuls, and SBZ 14.4 Impuls share a common 14.4V rail and the same slide-in connector geometry with identical BMS communication pins. The ULA9.6-18 spans a voltage range that includes 14.4V, so the same connector and handshake protocol apply across all four models.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through repeated trigger-pull events on a BSZ 14.4 frame. The BMS held the overcurrent threshold correctly on motor-start inrush and released cleanly after each draw spike without nuisance trips.
- First-use conditioning on the BSZ 14.4: Run the drill at half load — light fastening, not max-torque driving — for the first two cycles. This allows the BMS to profile the motor's inrush current draw before locking overcurrent protection thresholds, reducing false cutoffs later.
BMS cutoff on BSZ 14.4 motor-start inrush surge
When you pull the trigger on a cordless drill, the motor draws a short, sharp current spike before it reaches running speed. On the BSZ 14.4, this inrush can hit three to five times the steady-state draw for a fraction of a second. A new or cold battery with a freshly initialised BMS may read that spike as an overcurrent fault and cut the pack. Running two break-in cycles at reduced load lets the BMS log the motor's inrush signature and adjust its trip threshold accordingly, so it stops tripping on normal starts.
Charger not recognising a new pack after storage
Li-ion cells self-discharge slowly in storage. If a pack sits long enough, cell voltage can drop below the threshold the Metabo charger uses to confirm a live pack — typically around 2.5V per cell, or roughly 10V total for a 14.4V four-cell pack. The charger blinks red or shows no activity because it will not begin a charge cycle on what it reads as a dead or damaged pack. Briefly connecting a known-good 14.4V source across the terminals for 30–60 seconds can bring cell voltage up past the 10V acceptance threshold so the charger initiates normally.
