A degraded original battery holds a surface charge that reads higher than its true state — the voltage-threshold indicator shows two bars, then the cell collapses and the unit cuts off. After fitting a new cell, the fuel gauge recalibrates over one or two full charge cycles. Until it does, the warning may still appear later than expected. Run the unit down to auto-shutoff and charge it fully to 4.2V twice, and the indicator will track the actual cell state accurately.
