NiKon 1 J5 — 7.2V Li-ion Replacement Battery (EN-EL24)
This is a 7.2V, 500mAh Li-ion cell that replaces the EN-EL24 battery in the NiKon 1 J5 mirrorless camera. It fits the 1 J5 body directly and works with the OEM charger. Dimensions match the original at 46.95 × 29.05 × 13.10 mm.
- 1 J5 platform fit: The 1 J5 uses a compact cell footprint specific to this model — the EN-EL24 slot is not shared with other Nikon 1 series bodies. Voltage rail and connector orientation are fixed to this camera's power board, so there is no substitution across the range.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the 1 J5 body. The BMS accepted the cell without error flags, and cutoff triggered cleanly at the low-voltage threshold — no unexpected shutdowns mid-cycle.
- First charge cycle on the 1 J5 body: Charge the new cell fully inside the camera body or OEM charger before your first shoot. The 1 J5 BMS maps its battery-remaining display against the discharge curve established during that first cycle — skipping it causes inaccurate percentage readings early on.
Why the 1 J5 battery percentage jumps erratically after fitting a new cell
The 1 J5 uses a voltage-threshold model to estimate remaining charge. A new cell has a slightly different discharge curve than a worn OEM battery, so the camera's lookup table maps the voltage incorrectly at first. This shows up as the percentage jumping from 80% to 40% in a few shots, or holding at 100% then dropping suddenly. One full charge-discharge cycle through the camera body recalibrates the mapping and stabilises the display.
Shot count lower than expected when using continuous AF or burst mode
The 1 J5 spec shot count is measured under CIPA conditions — single-shot AF, LCD off between shots, no stabilisation load. Continuous AF, burst shooting, and live view all pull additional current that the CIPA number does not reflect. At 500mAh, this cell has a small reserve, so sustained burst sequences draw it down faster than single-shot use. To extend time between swaps, use single-AF mode and switch the LCD off between frames.
